Take action ! United against LGBT discrimination in Eastern Europe

The project set out an advocacy strategy aiming to support partner organisations to produce evidence of discrimination, and working with them in using it to lobby European institutions.

Diversity and Equality project

In April 2008 ILGA-Europe conducted a survey among its member organisations on their diversity policies and practices.

Freedom of assembly and expression

On 24 April 2007 ILGA-Europe launched a campaign on freedom of assembly for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Europe.

2007 - European Year of Equal Opportunities

The European Union has designated 2007 as ‘European Year of Equal Opportunities for All’. The Year aims at making people in the EU more aware of their rights not to be discriminated against and at promoting equal opportunities in various areas, from healthcare to the workplace. Activities at national and EU level will focus on many grounds of discrimination, including discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Council of Europe Additional Protocol 12

The revision, through Additional Protocol 12, of Article 14 of the European Human Rights Convention presented an historic opportunity to reconsider the list of grounds of discrimination in this article. ILGA-Europe lobbied for the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity and made submissions to the Council of Europe to this effect.

Health project

There are barriers to accessing health care that are specific to LGBT people. Those barriers experienced by other populations, e.g. lack of resources, geographic and social isolation, lack of information about and/or fear of medical procedures etc. may also pertain to LGBT people.

Social exclusion

The EU has been working on the eradication of poverty and social exclusion since 2000. Through the so-called open method of co-ordination, common objectives are defined, that in turn are translated into national action plans. Although there is a clear link between the discrimination experienced by gay, lesbian, and bisexual people and levels of poverty and social exclusion, little attention has been paid to this issue at EU level.
