amfAR - AIDS Research
amfAR supports HIV/AIDS research, prevention, education, and training programs in dozens of countries across the developing world. And through the MSM Initiative, amfAR awards grants to grassroots groups in support of innovative HIV/AIDS services for men who have sex with men in resource-limited countries.

Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice
Astraea funds lesbian organisations and cultural media projects that directly address the depth and complexities of lesbian and trans issues. They also support LGBTI organisations, women's organisations, and progressive organisations that have lesbians and trans people in leadership roles and include lesbian and trans issues as an integral part of their work.

Charles Steward Mott Foundation
The Charles Steward Mott Foundation is a private US based foundation. The have a program specifically focused on civil societies in Central/Eastern Europe (CEE) and Russia.

Civil Rights Defenders
All organisations sharing the goals of the Civil Rights Defenders are welcome to apply for funds. The projects must relate to activities in the countries in which the Civil Rights Defenders is active: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Serbia, Montenegro, Russia and Sweden.

EEA Grants and Norway Grants
The Funds supports the civil society organisations in the 15 beneficiary states in Central and Southern Europe. In total for the funding period 2009 to 2014 - €1.789 billion is available, and 10% of this will be used to support the particular programme area relevant for most LGBTI organisations. The size of the grants varies from € 5000 to € 45.000. The Funds emphasize bilateral cooperation between both donor and beneficiary states as well as between organisations from different beneficiary states.

Euroasia Foundation
Eurasia Foundation is a privately managed non-profit organisation supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other public and private donors. Since 1992, Eurasia Foundation has invested more than $400 million through more than 8,400 grants and operating programs in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

FLOW: Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women
FLOW is a fund initiated by the Dutch Foreign Ministry to strengthen the rights and opportunities for women and girls worldwide.

Ford Foundation
The Ford Foundation works to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation and advance human achievement. Sexuality is one of their interest areas.

France Coopération Internationale (FCI)
In the framework of the fund “Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity”, France Coopération Internationale (FCI) calls for proposals in order to finance projects.

  • Aiming at the fight against repressive legislations and/or the penalization of relationships between people of the same sex or
  • Aiming at the fight for the freedom of speech and association on these themes.

Funders for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Issues
US-based LGBTQ Funders Directory provides information on potential funders for organisations and projects working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) communities. All of the organsations listed have provided financial support to LGBTQ programmes. However, the extent of support varies greatly, from exclusive funding of LGBTQ projects, to awarding a single grant to a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender organisation.This Directory is the most comprehensive listing of LGBTQ funders in the US.

Global Fund for Women
The Global Fund for Women supports organisations which:

  • demonstrate a clear commitment to women's equality and female human rights
  • show concern about the way women are viewed and view themselves in society
  • are governed and directed by women
  • consist of a group of women working together (they do not accept requests from individuals)
  • are based outside of the United States

This is association of grantmakers devoted to supporting efforts to achieve the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the treaties and laws it has generated so that all people may enjoy a truly and fully human existence.

Levi Strauss Foundation
The Levi Strauss Foundation has a focus on HIV/AIDS and supports policy advocacy, law reform and other efforts to ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS are treated with dignity and respect and have access to critical services.

Mama Cash
Dutch foundation fund and support women and girls' human rights groups that push beyond the status quo to transform unjust systems and relations and bring about fundamental change for themselves and their communities.

They also fund and support local and regional women's funds so that they can build the capacities of emerging, grassroots, and established womens and girls' human rights organisations in their countries.

MATRA Programme (programme under Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
Designed to promote social transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. It supports existing private initiatives, focusing on activities that contribute to the development of a pluralist and democratic society, securely embedded in the rule of law. Matra seeks also to promote cooperation and interaction between private and public bodies.

MTV Staying Alive Foundation
The foundation give out small sums of money to young people have one thing in common – they’re fighting to conquer HIV and AIDS in their local communities in the most creative and innovative ways.

National Endowment for Democracy
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, with funding from the US Congress, NED supports more than 1,000 projects of non-governmental groups abroad who are working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries. One of the focus areas is Central and Eastern Europe.

Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation Network
Runs several grant schemes on human rights, rule of law and minority rights and known to support LGBT projects in Central and Eastern Europe.

PlanetRomeo Foundation
Aims to support the needs of the LGBT community. The rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are central to this aim. The Foundation supports activities in the spheres of education, culture, health, emancipation and sport. Other projects which seek to mobilize and activate the community may also qualify for support.

Reebok Human Rights Foundation
Serves as the charitable arm of Reebok International Ltd. and its subsidiaries. The Foundation funds programmes that can make a difference in our communities and that seek to promote and protect human rights around the world.

Sida - Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency
Sida works is to improve the standard of living of poor people and, in the long term, to eradicate poverty. They already supported a few projects on LGBT issues and currently work in following countries: Division for Southeast Europe, SEE, is working with the Balkans: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo and Croatia and - to a small extent - with Romania and Bulgaria. Division for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, EECA, is working with the countries of the former Soviet Union, i.e. Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Southern Caucasia - mainly Georgia - and Central Asia - mainly Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. This division is also responsible for a small co-operation with Turkey.

Sigrid Rausing Trust
The Sigrid Rausing Trust is a philanthropic foundation based in Britain. It takes as its guiding framework the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Trust's funding categories are all human rights orientated and aim to form a coherent framework for the work of the Trust.

Social Development Civil Society Fund
The purpose of the Social Development Civil Society Fund under the World Bank is is one of the few global programs of the World Bank that directly funds civil society organisations. It is a concrete tool to aid in the advancement of the Bank’s social development agenda to empower poor and marginalized groups.

Stichting Fonds de Trut
The Dutch based Trut Foundation subsidies a broad range of causes within the national and international LGBT community. It has to be smallscale and the subsidy will have to be substantial for the project

The Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe
The goal of the US based trust is to promote the development of civil societies in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia by supporting civil society organisations to gain greater effectiveness and stability.

United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF)
UNDEF’s primary purpose is of supporting democratization around the world; it supports projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes. Supported projects are two years long and fall under one or more of six main areas: Community development, Rule of law and human rights, Tools for democratization, Women, Youth and Media. So far in Europe, 30 projects have been funded by UNDEF totalling $US 8,080,200.

US-Baltic Foundation
The U.S.- Baltic Foundation supports democratic and free market reforms in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. They have various programmes and supported various LGBT projects.

Independent funding organisation in the Netherlands. By providing social movements and small scale initiatives all over the worldwith financial support, the Fund strive for a world based on more just economical,political and social relations. Their support helps groups and organisations in the Eastern Europe to set up programmes aimed at social justice and politicalselfdetermination.
