Message of support from the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano
ILGA-Europe welcomes message of support from the President of the Republic of Italy
President Giorgio Napolitano.
On 27 October 2011, the 15th Annual Conference of ILGA-Europe, which is currently taking place in Turin, Italy, received a following message of support from Giorgio Napolitano, the President of the Republic of Italy.
“The President of the Republic wants to extend a cordial greeting to the organisers and participants of the 15th Conference of ILGA-Europe whose works on the topic "Human Rights and Traditional Values: Clash or Dialogue" open today in Turin.
The Head of State is pleased that Italy is hosting a European Conference on a subject so important and current: the full freedom and respect for individual choices in sexual context are certainly among the most delicate and crucial issues for a more complete statement of the rights of the human person in the contemporary world.
It is in this spirit that President Napolitano sends best wishes for success in your work.
General Secretary Presidency of the Republic”
Martin K.I. Christensen, Co-Chair of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board, said:
“We all heartedly welcome and appreciate the message from President Giorgio Napolitano. We very much hope that our presence in Italy will raise greater awareness on the discrimination and prejudice lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people still experience in Europe and Italy.”
Enzo Cucco, the Co-ordinator of the Organising Committee of ILGA-Europe’s Annual Conference in Turin, added:
“We hope that the wide support and participation of the representatives of various national and local Italian authorities at our Annual Conference will finally lead to specific commitments and practical steps towards elimination of discrimination against LGBTI people in Italy.”
This year’s Annual Conference is organised in cooperation with the Organising Committee of the 15th ILGA-Europe’s Annual Conference in Turin.
The Annual Conference has the patronage of the Italian Senate Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, Minister for Equal Opportunities, the Municipality of Turin, the Province of Turin and Esperienza Italia 150º.
